Everything about Heidelberg West Victoria totally explained

Heidelberg West is a suburb with poor realestate in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable as the site of the 1956 Summer Olympics athlete's village. The village was converted into a housing commission estate following the conclusion of the games, and in recent years has had properties sold into private hands. In 2006 the suburb was selected for "urban renewal" by the State Government because it suffers from a low socio-economic profile.
At the 2006 census, it had a population of 5097.

The Mall

The Suburb is home to The Mall Shopping centre. The Mall is an open style shopping centre constructed during the 1950's which features an IGA supermarket as well as a Blocbuster Video store and Subway take away store. The centre is to be redeveloped as a part of the urban renewal plan. Across from The Mall is an Aldi supermarket along with a Priceline Pharmacy, TAB and about 3 stores, including the local cellers which is popular amongst the youths. This isn't the only retail in the area as there's a shopping strip at the end of Bell Street including several car and motorbike dealers plus a McDonald's fast food outlet. It is also close to Northland Shopping Centre in nearby Preston, Victoria.

O.V.P.S.

Olympic Village Primary School is a small but important school with children from many backgrounds,it has a few grades and everyone knows each other. It has various activities including circus and sport. The principal is Ms. Libby Young(She barracks for the magpies).

The Darebin Creek

Heidelberg West is quite a rugged suburb. To get away from all that, locals usually head down to the Darebin Creek and surrounding parklands to refresh their minds. However dont be supprised if you happen to spot a few youths chroming chemical products to provide a high feeling sensation.

Repat Hospital

Heidelberg West is home to the Austin Hospital (Repatriation Campus) which is going to be redeveloped soon as a part of the Victorian State Government 'Healthier Victoria' plan. The suburb also includes NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of Technology) TAFE college and is nearby to La Trobe University.
